If you're new to Twitch, the monetization ecosystem can seem confusing. Viewers can support their favourite creators in several ways: subscribing, gifting subs, donating directly via PayPal, or using "Bits." In this article, we'll break down the difference between direct donations and Bits, and which one is actually better for the streamer.
What Are Twitch Bits?
Bits are Twitch's official virtual currency. Viewers buy Bits directly from Twitch using real money (e.g., $1.40 for 100 Bits). They can then "Cheer" these Bits in a streamer's chat. When a viewer Cheers, animated gem emotes appear in the chat, and the streamer earns exactly $0.01 per Bit.
Pros of Bits:
- Chargeback Protection: Because viewers buy Bits from Twitch, Twitch handles the payment processing. If a viewer tries to issue a fraudulent credit card chargeback, Twitch absorbs the hit, not the streamer.
- Integration: Bits are deeply integrated into Twitch. They contribute to chat badges, leaderboards, and Hype Trains.
- Safety: Neither the viewer nor the streamer sees each other's real names or PayPal emails.
What Are Direct Donations?
Direct donations (often called "tips") bypass Twitch entirely. Streamers set up a tip jar using a third-party service like Streamlabs or PayPal. Viewers click a link in the streamer's panels and send money directly to the streamer's account.
Pros of Direct Donations:
- No Twitch Cut: Twitch takes a roughly 30-40% cut when viewers buy Bits. With direct donations, the streamer gets the full amount minus a small processing fee (usually around 2.9% + $0.30 via PayPal).
- Instant Payout: Direct donations usually hit the streamer's PayPal account immediately, whereas Bit revenue is paid out by Twitch once a month (and only if a $50 threshold is met).
The Chargeback Danger
The biggest risk with direct donations is chargebacks. A malicious viewer might donate $500 to get a reaction on stream, and then call their bank the next day to report the charge as fraudulent. The bank forcibly takes the money back from the streamer, and PayPal often hits the streamer with an additional $15-$20 penalty fee. This is why many large streamers prefer Bits, despite Twitch taking a cut upfront.
Which is Better?
It depends on the size of the channel. For smaller streamers who need cash immediately and can't afford Twitch's high margins on Bits, direct donations via PayPal are usually preferred. However, as a channel grows, the risk of fraudulent chargebacks increases exponentially. For massive creators, the safety and integrated chat features of Bits make them the clear winner.
